The Winter Fuel Fund - surviving winter
Sam Weller (CCF Trustee) interview with Andie Harper (BBC Radio Cambridgeshire) about the CCF Winter Fuel Fund - listen to the interview and subsequent update.
Winter causes great distress to older people who are vulnerable because of poor health, loneliness or low income.
If you were born on ??or ??before 5 Jan 1951 you may receive a 2011 Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300, as a universal state benefit. Although many recipients need help with their winter living costs, there are some people who do not rely on the payment, feel uncomfortable receiving it, and who believe that it would be better donated to help others in need.
Cambridgeshire Community Foundation has opened The Cambridgeshire Winter Fuel Fund as part of a national surviving winter campaign to accept Winter Fuel Payments. The Fund will provide much needed support to charitable projects working for our elderly and vulnerable neighbours. For example, The Waterbeach Day Centre provides hot meals and social interaction for elderly members every week and The East Barnwell Friendship Club arranges outings for its elderly members. All these volunteer led projects rely on grants and donations to operate and collectively they help eliminate the worst excesses that wintertime can cause disadvantaged elderly people in Cambridgeshire.
