Budding artist 2012 Herward Rotary / ADeC Schools Art Competition 22-Jan-2012 Our Club hosted, in conjunction with ADeC, our second Schools Art Competition, with prizes sponsored by local businesses. Prizes were presented on January 13th, and all the entries - over 150, from pupils of all ages, were displayed in the Babylon Gallery for the following week, attracting almost 1,000 visitors. The exhibition lasted nine days this year, and enabled many more people, including proud parents, to see the childrens’ creative and imaginative work.
Dawn with Club President Maurice, and June Snowden (1) Visitor from Australia - via Germany... 11-Jan-2012 Dawn Seabrook is a Youth Exchange Student from Australia, who had just finished her one year exchange in Germany. staying with families in Unna in Germany. She met club member June Snowden in Germany and came over to Ely, staying with June. Her experiences dispelled the myths surrounding these young people - she had to work hard to save up the money needed for the visit - and she does not come from a wealthy background. A most intersting and informative talk, and a great ambassador for Rotary.

Visit and talk by a returning GSE member 07-Dec-2011 Tonight's GSE visitor was Hannah Bennett, talking about her experiences on her recent trip to the USA. Hannah is a languages graduate and a professionally qualified fundraiser. She was sponsored by the Cambridge Rtary Club, and lives in Ely. Kate Secker, who accompanied her on the the trip, is a member of Norwich St Edmund RC and a Director of Human Resources.
Club members Sarah Lindsell, Frank Connolly, Alan Hampton, Penny Tipler, and Mike Judkins - looking very wet... 2011 Christmas street collection 05-Dec-2011 For eleven days in December our club members joined the Ely Rotary Club, The Inner Wheel, the Lions, and some enthusiastic teenagers from Ely Community College to take Father Christmas round the streets of Ely, raising over £4,000 to give to local charities and good causes.

Santa's Grotto - The Maltings, December 2011 04-Dec-2011 When The Mayor and The City of Ely Council decided to run a Christmas Show for the younger children of Ely, our club were invited to provide a Santa. Frank Lindsell made an admirable Father Christmas, as the photos show. The show - a musical version of The Snowman" - and Santa were a great success, and all the children who attended wen away enchanted.

Anne and Neville Williams - Christmas lights switch-on - Nov 25 2011 Ely Christmas Lights switch-on 2011 25-Nov-2011 Hardy Hereward Club members manned the street barriers to help with the ever popular Ely Christmas Lights switch-on on November 25th, whilst Gary and Tina Gardner, helped by a rota of other club volunteers, manned our Mulled Wine stall, raising money for club funds.

Visitor from America 23-Nov-2011 Exchange visitor Jacob Cox, from Lexington in the USA, visited our club to talk about his family, his home town, his achievements, and his ambitions. This was his first "public performance" - a fascinating and inspiring talk from a young man who came across as a credit to himself, his family, and his country. Town Crier, High Sheriff, Mayor, Club President Maurice Weller, and Consort to Town Crier. Visit by the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire 12-Oct-2011 On October 12th the club was honoured by the presence of The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Richard Barnwell DL, who came along to tell club members and guests about his role. To add even more colour to the evening, also present in full regalia was the Mayor of Ely - club member and Past-President John Yates, and the Ely Town Crier and her Consort - Avril and Graham Hayter-Smith. John Yates, Alan, Sue, Neville, and Lucy Mayor's Fundraising event 20-Jul-2011 Club members were invited to a wine and cheese evening at the home of The Mayor of Ely (and club member) John Yates and his wife Helen, to hear about his Youth Charity of the Year. The event raised £201.50 to get the charity off to a flying start.

Visitors sing for their supper... 13-Jul-2011 Our club had some very special guests at our meeting on Wednesday July 13th. Four members of the Canterbury Singers choir from America, who had been singing at Ely Cathedral all week, joined us for the evening. Rotarians Arthur and Nan Squire from Little Rock Arkansas, and Joel Schmittgen and Kristen Jones, from Elyria in Ohio, entertained our club by performing one of their musical pieces.

Handover Night - June 29 2011 29-Jun-2011 As her last act as President of the club before handing over to new President Maurice Weller, Debbie Bull presented cheques to her two chosen charities of the year. A cheque for £250 was presented to Zoe Davidson of ADeC for their Arts Award work. This was in addition to a previous cheque for £250 which was put to similar use. A cheque for £500 was presented to Avril Hayter-Smith from the Ely Volunteer Centre. The Centre aim is to place potential volunteers with an interesting variety of suitable work.
The Winners - Richard Tyler and Mike Anthony Golf at Lakeside Golf Centre, Pidley 22-Jun-2011 The torrential rain cleared, the sun shone, and we again had a wonderful warm evening for our annual "Pitch and Putt" at Pidley. Team Winners were Hereward Club member Mike Anthony and Ely Rotary Club Member Richard Tyler.

As usual they had the top scorer, Caroline, but our club's highest scorer, Neville, was not far behind.

Fun and games at the Ely "Party in the Park" 29-Apr-2011 As part of the local celebrations for the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Katherine Middleton, Ely City Council organised an afternoon of family fun on the green in front of Ely Cathedral. Our club organised garden-sized versions of well known family games which kept many youngsters busy during the afternoon.

An Evening With David Mercer 09-Apr-2011 Around 80 people enjoyed an entertaining and informative evening in the company of BBC commentator and former Wimbledon umpire David Mercer. David regailed us with stories from his time at Wimbledon, and insights into the world of tennis and its personalities. Profits from the evening will go to Rotary Foundation, to help with the world-wide polio eradication campaign.

We also enjoyed an interesting talk from one of our guests - Ruth Bond, Chair of the National Federation of the Women's Institutes.

Newspaper article from The Ely Weekly News Herward Rotary/ADEC Art comptition and exhibition 07-Jan-2011 With the support of ADeC (Arts Development in East Canbridgeshire)and local sponsors, our club organised an art competition for local primary and secondary schools. Pupils aged from 4-18 years old exhibited everything from paintings to sculptures and paintings, with prizes for those judged to be the best. More than 700 people visited the exhibition at the Babylon Gallery over the weekend following the judging and prize presentations.

Ely Santa Street Collection 06-Dec-2010 The two Ely Rotary Clubs, plus Ely Lions and Ely Inner Wheel, hit the streets of Ely again for over two weeks in Decmber, bringing children an early chance to see Father Christmas, and collecting money for kocal charities.

Ely Rowing Club - Boat naming 21-Nov-2010 On Sunday November 21st there was a naming ceremony for a new boat at The Isle Of Ely Rowing Club. The boat was named "The Ely Hereward" in recognition of the support given by our Club to the Rowing Club since its founding, most recently with the profits from a very successful barn dance, which contributed to the purchase of the much needed additional boat.

Crocus planting at Ely Station 21-Nov-2010 On Sunday November 21st, 1,000 crocus bulbs were planted at Ely Station by club members. The bulb planting was the result of a campaign that we ran in the local newspaper, where club members offered to give up some time to support a worthy local cause. Our Club has also offered to support the Garden by providing some funds to ensure plants are replaced or added to.
Charles, Frank, and Daniel - this years winners The annual golf challenge 2010 30-Jun-2010 Glorious weather again for the annual short golf challenge at Pidley. Overall winners were Charles (Ely Club) and Daniel. Best individual score was from Frank Lindsell (Hereward Club).

Overseas Study Exchange Team from Bangaluru, India 19-May-2010 A team of four of the Group Study Exchange isitors from Bangalurue visited our Club and made some excellent and intersesting presentations to our members, sharing details of their homeland, their families, and their careers. Their quiet, unassuming friendliness has left some great memories will us.

A cheque for £750 is presented to Ely HomeStart Barn Dance 2010 13-Mar-2010 Our Annual fundraising Barn Dance was again well attended and a great success. A cheque for an additional £750 raised during the year was presented on the night to Ely Homestart, who were last year's beneficiaries - and £700 was raised on the night for The Isle of Ely Rowing Club.
Ely Library display (2) Rotary Week - Thanks for Life 07-Mar-2010 To support The Rotary Week "Thanks for Life" campaign, a week-long display was mounted at Ely Library to publicise the work of Rotary and our local clubs.

Disco Night (2) 1960s and 70s Charity Disco 20-Nov-2009 Friday November 20th 2009 saw the first Hereward Charity Disco, raising funds for Rotary's Polio Eradication Charity. As you can see from the photographs, people entered into the sprit of the night, and a great time was had by all.

The first winner was Club Member Christine, who is seen holding the new trophy, along with our "Club Champion" trophy , previously held by Alan Hampton - our 2009 Mini Golf Champion.

Ruth in the Raft Race Aquafest 2009 05-Jul-2009 The 2009 Ely Aquafest was again supported by our Club, who also ran the stalls and events on Jubilee Gardens. Good weather and bumper crowds produced the best Aquafest for many years. Over £500 was raised from our tombola and second hand bookstalls alone.
Our intrepid group of walkers is briefed (Health and Safety!). Chettisham Meadows 13-May-2009 Despite a poor weather forecast and burst of heavy rain, a group of intrepid club members went on a tour of Chettisham Meadows in the company of Helen and Terry Moore from The BCNP Wildlife Trust.
President June and the Mayor of Ely lead off the first of the walkers 2009 Great Ely Walk 03-May-2009 The fourth Great Ely Walk, organised to enable local charities to fundraise through sponsorship, took place in ideal conditions for walking. Details of the results of the fundraising activity will be posted later.
2009 Charter Night 20-Mar-2009 Our Club's fifth Charter Night was held at the Almonry in Ely, in the company of club members with their partners and guests, Ely Lions, fellow Rotarians from Distict and other local clubs, and the Mayor of Ely and her Consort. Fine food, drink and conversation was followed by the induction of two new members - Christine and Maurice - and rounded off with a dissertation from the club's own bard, Bill Conroy.

The leading group of walkers by the riverside at Willow Walk Great Ely Walk 2008 07-Sep-2008 Undeterred by threats of torrential rain, walkers turned up to raise funds for their chosen charities. Photos show walkers by the river, accompanied by Club President June Snowden, and June with The Mayor and the Town Crier, at the start. The walk is organised by our club to provide a platform for local organisations to fundraise - although some people come along just for the walk! In the end the rain held off until the walk had finished, and the walkers raised over £600 for their charities.

AQUAFEST 06-07-08 06-Jul-2008 The theme this year was "raising the Rotary profile" We had a special display of Rotary achievements throughout the World, a ShelterBox competition,and a Filtastraw display. We also had a tombola,and a second hand bookstall to help raise funds for our local charities All members wore special Rotary T shirts, and worked hard in appalling wet and windy conditions to produce one of the best yet

Charter Celebration Dinner 2008 19-Mar-2008 This year we again celebrated the anniversary of our Charter with a meal at the Cutter Inn, Ely. Honoured guests included DG Duncan Howlett and President of the Ely Rotary Club - Sue Thompson, and a representative from Inner Wheel. A competition was held for the most unusual item found in a ladies handbag, and the most outrageous socks work by a man!
Team spirit! - June, Thea, and Alan. Ten Pin Bowling with the Lions 13-Feb-2008 Twenty six players took part in the annual ten pin bowling evening with the Ely Lions. Sadly one of our members didn't win outright, but club President Alan Hampton turned in our best score of the night to take over from quiz champion Sarah Lindsell as current club trophy holder.

Christmas street collection, December 2007 06-Dec-2007 As usual, members of both Ely Rotary Clubs were out with the Lions in all weathers, taking Father Christmas to call on the children of Ely and to collect money for local charities. The total raised in this year's collection was around £6500. On the day these photos were taken it was pouring with rain...

International Ambassadorial visitors 07-Nov-2007 On Wednesday November 7th 2007 we were joined by two of the Cambridge Ambassadorial Scholars - Mayu Sakota, sponsored by the Yokohama Club in Japan, and Scott Kelly, sponsored by the Auckland Club in New Zealand. They both gave illuminating and interesting talks about their families and themselves, their countries, what they were doing now, and their hopes for the future. They were brought along by Terry Gardner, who is a member of the South Cambridge club.

A musical interlude was provided by Joannna Eden - and the evening was concluded by presenting a cheque to Martin for £400 for UNICEF

Group Study Exchange visitors April 25th 2007 Group Study Exchange visitors from Turkey 25-Apr-2007 On Wednesday April 25th we welcomed five Turkish visitors. The group were here on the Rotary Group Study Exchange scheme to see and experience social and business life in the UK. They were greeted by club members John Ison, the Mayor of Ely, and Avril Hayter-Smith, the Town Crier, both in full regalia. The attached photograph was taken at our meeting in the Lamb Hotel. Front Row L - R, Michael Judkins Foundation Chair, Ely Hereward, Bridget Kendall, Philip Eden President 06-07 Ely Hereward An Evening with Bridget Kendall 07-Oct-2006 "An Evening with Bridget Kendall" was an evening organised by our Foundation committee for the purposes of raising money for the World Wide Rotary Foundation. The evening was divided into three parts, with Bridget telling us about her work as the BBC Diplomatic correspondent in both Moscow and Washington. Invocal - an all girl group provided an interesting and highly entertaining musical interlude, and Bridget closed the evening by answering questions from the audience

Great Ely Walk 2006 03-Sep-2006 The first Great Ely Walk raised over £1,000 for local charities. We hope it will become an annual event, growing in popularity and raising even more funds for local charities.
Rotarians at play... A Bonsai night..... 23-Aug-2006 A great evening of fellowship at Avril and Graham's house, with friends, good food, drink and a quiz... The "Name that Bonsai" competition was won jointly by Lucy and Tina. Lucy confessed to having been banned by the RSPCB(onsai) from taking plants home, so Tina promised to take it home, talk to it nicely, and water it daily. A whip round (Philip held the whip)ensured a donation went to the Ely Volunteer Centre. Thanks to Avril & Graham for a great evening.
Ely-Hereward 2006 "Mini" Golf Tournament - Pidley 12-Jul-2006 This annual event is organised by Michael Judkins - and is Ely Hereward's answer to the British Open! We have our very own Tiger Woods - otherwise known as Frank "Dead-eye" Lindsell, but this year he was beaten by another bandit - Alan Hampton.
The Stone sponsoring area Bikes at the Palace 11-Jun-2006 This event was held to launch the appeal for sponsorship for the paving stones needed to complete the Wheelchair access to the "Time Slips By" Chelsea Flower Show award winning garden design carefully re-created in the gardens of the Sue Ryder Centre in Ely. The Fenlanders Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club turned up in force to support the event, which was attended by Jessica Harris -the 15 year old web designer who suffers from ME that we have used for some fundraising websites.

Goldie in action Schools Javelin Gala 19-May-2006 This event was masterminded by Frank Lindsell, and involved 7 local schools who sent nearly 100 schoolchildren to have a coaching session on the Paradise field with Goldie Sayers - our Ely born Olympic Javelin thrower. Run by the Cambridge & Peterborough Sports Partnership in association with our Club the event turned out to be highly successful

Ambassadorial Scholars visit Club 09-Feb-2006 The Club was visited by two Ambassadorial scholars from Brazil and Japan, who both made a presentation about their respective countries. In addition Rachel Lamb from Archer & Archer who is going on a 1080 group exchange visit in April joined the meeting

The Club Barbeque at June Snowden's 15-Jun-2005 June Snowden hosted a Barbeque for Club members and friends. The weather was dry - but the evening turned quite cold. There was plenty of food, and drink, and a good time was had by all. About £150 was raised for our designated charities
Club Charter Anniversary Celebration 30-Mar-2005 A Champagne reception was held at the Maltings, Ely in celebration of the Club's first birthday.
Centenary Dinner & Dance 25-Feb-2005 The Dinner Dance was held to mark the Centenary of Rotary, and members from both the two Ely Clubs participated in this joint event.
Aquafest 2004 04-Jul-2004 This year at Aquafest, our club tried something different. A "Human Fruit Machine" was used to raise money for local charities - and have a bit of fun. Notable members of the "machine" were Philip Eden (ex Mayor of Ely) John Ison (Editor of the Ely Standard) and Mike Judkins (Archer & Archer -local Solicitors)

Shelter Box Instructions 13-Sep-2002 The Hereward Club made a valuble contribution the the International Shelterbox effort, by producing a set of visual instructions which showed how to assemble the 10 man tent. Photos in this album represent the entire photo-shoot made to compile the instruction sheet. A copy of these instructions (on an A3 sheet) is placed inside each Shelter Box dispatched
  Aquafest 2002 01-Jul-2002 The Hereward Club had a stall at the Rotary Club of Ely annual Aquafest fund raising event in July 2002.The Club organised a competition to match countries where disasters had occurred and where Shelter-Boxes have been sent. A Shelter Box 10-man tent was put on display as a fund raising tool
  Aquafest 2003 The Hereward Club had a stall at Aquafest, and Ian Dyer brought along his vintage car, which was the centre of a competition to guess the speedo -reading, and for the children to guess the name of the car. We also had a display to help raise money for the Sue Ryder Garden Project
Diamond 44 Oxford & Cambridge wartime boatrace The newly inaugurated club - now the Rotary Club of Ely -Hereward, sold rosettes and collected money for local charities at the Diamond 44 event, where the rerun of the 1944 boatrace between Oxford & Cambridge took place on a stretch of the Great Ouse at Queen Adelaide.
