Rotary Foundation Polio Plus project.

The Rotary Foundation is the charitable trust fund of Rotary International. It is Rotary’s charity and belongs to every Rotarian throughout the World, to further the aims of the movement. The objective of The Rotary Foundation is to achieve World understanding and peace through international humanitarian and educational programmes.

The foundations original function was to grant scholarships “for international understanding” which were awarded to graduates, undergraduates, journalists, teachers of the handicapped. And those with two years working experience who wish to study their vocation in another country.

A Rotary Foundation Matching Grant brought clean

drinking water to this small village.

Recently the Rotary Foundation has increased its involvement with humanitarian programmes, which may be charitable or educational. In 1980 in celebration of Rotary’s 75th anniversary the 3-H programme was set up and brought Rotarians into a new sphere of major projects concerning problems of health, hunger and humanity. The major immunisation programmes in the Philippines and a huge project to alleviate hunger in Ethiopia came out of 3-H, and the success of this led to the idea of controlling polio throughout the World by the year 2005, Rotary’s centenary year.

This evolved as PolioPlus – and vast funds have been raised by Rotary in order to meet the objective.

A Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation provided solar energy for three rural

schools near Santiago del Estero, Argentina.
